National Institute of Tradition Medicine in The Royal University of Bhutan

The National Institute of Traditional Medicine or NITM was established in 1971 as a part of the Department of Health Sciences. Later it became a constituent college of The Royal University of Bhutan in 2003. The National Institute of Traditional Medicine is located in Kawajangsa in the capital city of Thmphu and it is the only Higher Education Institute of the country to train professional physicians and health workers in the field of medicine.

Programs to Study in The National Institute of Traditional Medicine as a College

The National Institute of Traditional Medicine offers two programs, which are:
  • Diploma in Traditional Medicine with duration of 3 years
  • B.Sc. in Traditional Medicine with duration of 5 years- Full time

Furthermore, with the exception of a few courses, all other disciplines are taught in the national language of Bhutan that is Dzongkha. Sowa Rigpa, which is one of the richest cultures and traditions of Bhutan is based in the National Institute of Traditional Medicine.

NITM aspires to produce graduates that are GNH inspired with knowledge and skills that stand at par to the international standards.

Research in The National Institute of Traditional Medicine as a College

The National Institute of Traditional Medicine also engages in research and innovation and thus, it has a dedicated centre called The Centre for Research and Development in Traditional Medicine.
