Institute of Language and Culture Studies

The Institute of Language and Culture Studies or ILCS was founded in 1961 as a Rigney Institute. However, it was later merged with The Royal University of Bhutan. It is located on the hilltop of Taktse in Trongsa, which forms the central Bhutan and is 6 hours drive from the capital Thimphu.

Programs to Study in Institute of Language and Culture Studies

The Institute of Language and Culture Studies offers several courses to students, which are:

• Diploma in Language and Communication Studies with duration of 2 years- Full time
• BA in Language and Culture with duration of 3 years- Full time
• BA in Language and Culture with duration of 4 years- Mixed Mode
• BA in Language and Literature with duration of 3 1 for Honours Award- Full time
• Undergraduate Program in Bhutanese and Himalayan Studies

The Institute of Language and Culture Studies aims to be an apex institution to provide higher studies in Bhutanese language, culture, Buddhist studies, Himalayan studies and GNH studies. Further, the ILCS’s motto is ‘To produce modern citizens with traditional knowledge’. Thus, the institute wants to instill good qualities and cultural values to their students through practical experience on culture, philosophy, language and history.

Research in Institute of Language and Culture Studies

The Institute of Language and Culture Studies has two research centres namely, Centre for History and Cultural Studies and Centre for Buddhist Studies.
